Are you searching for the best family hotels in Halifax? While waterfront hotels put you within walking distance of Halifax’s top attractions, many of the best kid-friendly hotels, with waterslides, splash pads, and lower price tags, are actually located across the harbour in Dartmouth.
Not sure which area makes the most sense for your family? Start with my guide to the best things to do in Halifax with kids so you can map out your must-do attractions before choosing where to stay.
After visiting Halifax three times, I can honestly say that staying outside the downtown core really isn’t a big deal. On our East Coast Canada road trip last summer, we stayed in a four-bedroom university residence suite instead of paying premium waterfront prices. On a winter girls’ getaway, we booked a two-bedroom apartment. In both cases, getting into downtown Halifax was quick and easy.
Below, I’ve rounded up my top picks for kid-friendly places to stay in Halifax for every budget. I’ve also included a few unique stays outside the city if you’re looking for something a little different.
Quick Picks
Strict Budget: Book a multi-room suite at the Mount Saint Vincent University Residence during the summer months.
Amenities for Kids: Head across the harbour to the Best Western Plus Dartmouth or the Delta Hotels by Marriott Dartmouth for waterslides.
Downtown Convenience: Splurge on a waterfront room at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel.
Unique Experience: Spend a few nights out in nature at Lindsay Lake Farms or Oak Island Resort.
Halifax vs. Dartmouth: Does It Matter?
Dartmouth sits right across the harbour and is connected to Halifax by two bridges and a public transit ferry. Most of the Dartmouth hotels on this list are only about a 20-minute drive from downtown Halifax.
While staying over there means you’ll have to drive, take an Uber, or hop on the ferry to get downtown, the trade-off is completely worth it for some families. The hotels on the Dartmouth side offer fantastic kid-friendly amenities, like waterslides and splash pads, for a fraction of the price of a downtown waterfront room.
However, if your goal is to park your car for the weekend and walk everywhere, or if you simply want to be in the middle of the action, you will have to pay a premium for that downtown Halifax location.
The Best Budget Hotel Options ($)
You don’t have to spend a fortune to find a clean, comfortable, and fun place for your kids to sleep in the Halifax area.
Mount Saint Vincent University Residence
My top family budget hotel hack is simple: stay in college or university residence housing during the summer months.
MSVU rents out its student residence rooms while classes are out, and it was easily the best budget option I found for our summer stay. Instead of cramming the four of us into a single hotel room, we got a full four-bedroom apartment with a living area, two bathrooms, and a kitchen for less than the cost of a standard hotel. It isn’t a luxury property, but having that extra privacy and room to spread out is a huge win when travelling with kids.

The Westin Nova Scotian
This beautiful, historic property is located at the southern edge of the downtown core, offering a classic East Coast hotel experience. The location is great, especially if you’re planning a visit to the Discovery Centre (read our full review). Located in the beautiful Musquodoboit Valley, this working family farm is an incredible hidden gem for a unique rural getaway. This is a full farm stay with lots of space for kids to explore. Final Thoughts on Choosing the Right Family Hotels in Halifax

Whether you want to stay right in the heart of downtown so you can walk everywhere, make Dartmouth Crossing your home base for easy day trips, or escape to a unique farm or glamping retreat outside the city, the area has so many great choices.
Finding the right family hotel in Halifax makes traveling with kids so much smoother. It really comes down to what your family needs most, whether that’s a giant waterslide to burn off energy, an in-room kitchen so you don’t have to eat every single meal at a restaurant, or having the attractions right outside your door.
When we planned our East Coast Canada road trip, picking the right home base in each destination was important. With Halifax being our sixth stop, we were ready to have a bit of personal space. While the dorms didn’t offer many hotel amenities, everyone having their own room made it easier for Brie and Zen to have a much-needed break day to just unwind.
